PFAS Purification
Together purifying the water environment

PFAS Purification is an innovative partnership between CTECH Europe, a global leader in wastewater treatment solutions and AA Environmental, a UK-based consultancy with proven expertise in PFAS remediation.  Together, they offer world class technology with specialist environmental expertise.

This collaboration delivers a one stop shop, characterising the problem and delivering proven, effective, and pragmatic strategies for tackling PFAS contamination in the water environment, all from a single, trusted source.

What is PFAS
and
where does it come from?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals containing carbon and fluorine atoms.  They are known for their water and grease repellent properties and have been used in various consumer and industrial products since the 1940s. Examples include non-stick cookware, textile water proofing, food packaging and a key industrial use is in firefighting foams. It is estimated that there are in excess of 11,000 different PFAS compounds.

The fluorine carbon bonds in PFAS are very strong and they do not readily degrade in the environment. They are frequently referred to as “forever chemicals”. PFAS can be readily transported in the water environment and spread from soils and landfills into groundwater and surface waters. Certain PFAS can also bioaccumulate in the food chain, meaning they build up in organisms over time and can reach harmful levels in plants, animals and humans.

As knowledge of the risks posed by PFAS to human health and ecosystems and their fate in the environment becomes better understood, there has been increased attention by both regulators and the media.

As a result land uses, including aerodromes, landfills and industrial processes are under regulatory scrutiny and there are emerging very low regulatory standards beginning to be applied to discharges to surface waters, groundwaters and sewers.

Monitoring and analysis of PFAS in the water environment must be carefully completed to ensure forensic levels of detection can be achieved. Regulators in UK, Europe, United States and Australia are requiring risk assessments and compliance with increasingly strict discharge standards. This is driving the need for a robust and practicable set of treatment technologies.
